Open enrollment for Covered CA began on Oct. 1, 2013 and will run until March 31, 2014. This sounds like a decent amount of time to enroll for new health insurance, but what about the start date of the new plan you’ve enrolled in or plan to enroll in?

As it turns out, if you want your new plan to begin coverage on January 1, 2014, your enrollment period is actually from Oct. 1, 2013 – Dec. 15, 2013. Any time after that your plan will begin coverage on the 1st of the following month, provided that you enrolled before or on the 15th of the previous month.

For example, someone who enrolled on January 15, 2014 would begin coverage on February 1, 2014. If they enrolled on January 16, 2014 their coverage would begin March 1, 2014 because they enrolled after the 15th. The person enrolling must also have paid their premium in full and the issuer must have received it by the due date. Newborns are covered the day they are born and do not wait for a coverage start date.

Just a bit of information I thought would be worthwhile in case you were going to wait until late Dec. to enroll.
